English Language ARtsThe grade 6 curriculum modules are designed to address CCSS ELA outcomes during a 45-minute English Language Arts block. The overarching focus for all modules is on building students’ literacy skills as they develop knowledge about the world.
MYTHS: NOT JUST LONG AGODuring the first quarter students are involved in a deep study of mythology, its purposes, and elements. Students will read Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief (780L). Some students may be familiar with this popular fantasy book; in this module, students will read with a focus on the archetypal journey. Through close reading, students will learn multiple strategies for acquiring and using academic vocabulary. Students will also build routines and expectations for discussions as they work in small groups. At the end of Unit 1, having read half of the novel, students will explain, with text-based evidence, how Percy is an archetypal hero. In Unit 2, students will continue reading The Lightning Thief (more independently): in class, they will focus on the novel’s many allusions to classic myths and read several complex Greek myths. In Unit 3, students shift their focus to narrative writing skills. This series of writing lessons will scaffold students to their final performance task in which they will apply their knowledge about the hero’s journey and the elements of mythology to create their own hero’s journey stories.

Google ClassroomFor the most current and up to date assignments and announcements in Mrs. Rapp's class, students must visit Google Classroom.
Google Classroom is a tool aimed to aid distributing and collecting assignments in a paperless way to students. Click here for the link to the site. Also, the district webpage has some helpful videos that include accessing grades from Powerschool on the Parent Resource page. SSR Reading LogSeptember and October* Reading Goal: 2 hours each
Students are required to read independently on a regular basis and turn in a reading log at the end of the month. Our class visits the school library bi-monthly to check out books. We also participate for 15 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) on those days. The library catalog is now a bookmark on the student Chromebooks. This is a great resource for students to search for books on their own. IF ANOTHER READING LOG IS NEEDED CLICK here TO PRINT ANOTHER COPY. |
